Permanent Wave FAQ
What is a permanent wave?
A permanent wave is a chemical treatment applied to hair to produce texture or curl pattern to the hair. The active ingredient is known as sodium thioglycolate and these types of permanent waves are also known as “cold waves”. If you are looking for a product with excellent styling versatility, we recommend asking your professional stylist about Wave Nouveau® Coiffure.
What condition should my hair be in before getting a permanent wave?
Before getting a permanent wave, hair must be in a healthy, natural or virgin state, free of any relaxer (sodium, lithium or guanidine hydroxide based products.
If my hair is natural and colored, can I get a permanent wave?
The answer is yes to both natural and color treated hair. However, you want to ensure that the hair is healthy, has balanced elasticity and porosity. If there is any previous relaxer product remaining in the hair, that hair must be cut off before the permanent wave application.
Can I have a straight look with a permanent wave?
Permanent waves do have the style capability of straight wear-ability. The best thing would be to follow the manufacturers’ instructions. An excellent product for this type of style versatility would be Wave Nouveau® Coiffure for a straight or curly style presentation.
How long can I wear a straight style with a permanent wave?
With the proper hair care maintenance regimen as prescribed by your professional stylist, there is no exact time frame for wearing hair straight. What is important is that you maintain the health of your hair.
Can I blow-dry my hair with a permanent wave?
Blow drying permanently waved hair is not recommended. Again, it is best to follow manufacturerss guidelines and to seek the assistance of your professional stylists.
What kind of heat can I use on my permanent wave?
You may mold the hair in a wrap style or set it on rollers and sit under a hooded dryer until hair is thoroughly dry. Try using Wave Nouveau® Coiffure Revitalizing Mousse. If you want to silk the hair for a smoother look, the ONLY recommended tool is a Ceramic Iron.
Can I apply hair color to a permanent wave?
Yes. It is recommended that you wait 2 weeks after a permanent wave. When color and a permanent wave are desired, always perform the permanent wave service first then after proper conditioning and analysis of healthy hair, you may proceed with your color service.
Will my hair have the wet look if I have a permanent wave?
The look of the permanent wave will be determined by the amount of product that is used on a daily basis. Excessive use of product will cause a moisture build up, causing the hair to look wet. Try using Wave Nouveau® Coiffure Daily Humectant for moisture or the Wave Nouveau Coiffure Mousse for hold and definition. Both of these maintenance products provide a matte finish.
Can I apply a permanent wave at home?
Because these products are considered professional, it is not recommended that you do a permanent wave at home. Ask a professional stylist about Wave Nouveau® Coiffure and its maintenance products.
